Our journey begins in Sub-Saharan Africa, where we find some of the oldest examples of creative human expression. Paintings estimated to be over 12,000 years old are scattered deep in the caves and outcroppings of the Tassili n'Ajjer Mountains in modern-day Algeria. Themes such as climate change, migration of the herds, hunting, family life, and even human evolution are presented in earthy colors formulated from mud, minerals, charcoal, fat, and spit. Though the Tassili n’Ajjer area is now a protected site, ancient cave paintings around the world are vulnerable to vandalism, irresponsible development, and atmospheric changes.
